Founded in New York in 1976 by Steven Holl, Steven Holl Architects has offices in New York and Beijing with a staff of 35. The firm has been recognized internationally with numerous awards, and the work has been widely published and exhibited. Steven Holl Architects is recognized for the ability to blend space and light with great contextual sensitivity and to utilize the unique qualities of each project to create a concept-driven design. Steven Holl Architects specialize in seamlessly integrating new projects into contexts with particular cultural and historic importance.
Steven Holl Architects has worked both nationally and overseas on a variety of public and private works. The office has extensive experience in the arts (including designs for museums, galleries, and exhibition designs), campus and educational facilities, and residential work. Other projects include retail design, office design, public utilities, and master planning. Several of the projects involve renovation and expansion of historically important structures, including the Cranbrook Institute of Science (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA) the Sarphatistraat Offices (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art addition and renovation (Kansas City, Missouri, USA).

In 2005 Steven Holl Architects completed a number of projects including two private residences, the Higgins Hall Center Section at the Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, New York, USA), the Whitney Water Purification Facility and Park (Southern Connecticut, USA) and Loisium Visitor Center and Wine Hotel & Spa (Langenlois, Austria). At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA), the 195,000 sf undergraduate dormitories completed construction in September 2002 and were rewarded with the National AIA Design Award in 2003.

Recently Steven Holl Architects won three international design competitions: for the Herning Center of the Arts (Herning, Denmark), Cité du Surf et de l’Océan (Biarritz, France) and Sail Hybrid, a seaside resort project in Knokke-Heist, Belgium.

Currently under construction are the Linked Hybrid (Beijing, China) and the Art & Architecture Museum (Nanjing, China). In fall 2006 Steven Holl Architects will open the University of Iowa Art and Art History Building (Iowa City, USA) and the New Residence at the Swiss Embassy (Washington D.C., USA). In Spring 2007 the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art addition and renovation (Kansas City, USA) will be completed and open to the public.

Steven Holl Architects has been recognized with architecture’s most prestigious awards and prizes including Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (2003), the Smithsonian Institute’s Cooper Hewitt National Design National Design Award in Architecture (2002), the French Grande Médaille d’Or (2001), the Chrysler Award for Innovation in Design and the prestigious Alvar Aalto Medal (both in 1998), the New York American Institute of Architects Medal of Honor (1997) and the American Academy of Arts and Arnold W. Brunner Prize for Achievement in Architecture as an Art (1990). Time Magazine named Steven Holl Architects as America’s Best Architects, for "buildings that satisfy the spirit as well as the eye."
